Resumen
Si hubo una fuerza que promovió la aparición del primer periodismo en la Europa de los siglos XVII y XVIII, esa fue una notable voluntad persuasiva para documentar el presente. Un presente que deviene historia, movilizado por los intereses divergentes que estructuran toda relación de poder. El periodismo como profesión y campo de lucha por el sentido es un eficaz instrumento en esa contienda simbólica y material por el poder, pero también su contralor. Así, funciona como analista, veedor y narrador, y se transforma a sí mismo montado a los cambios históricos de los que también es artífice. Por eso, la prensa en tanto obra cultural es reflejo fecundo de su tiempo. Hablamos de transformaciones tecnológicas que establecieron formas de comunicar, procesar información y organizar la sociedad. Si la invención de la escritura como tecnología de la comunicación marcó el inicio de la Historia en tanto “me-dio de comunicación” revolucionario; la invención del papel, la imprenta, la radio o la televisión también significaron hitos en la evolución del periodismo y de la cultura humana. Hoy estamos ante el imperio de los medios digitales. La digitalización cul-tural transformó el modo de relacionarnos, representarnos y abordar el mundo. Sin embargo, todavía hay mucho que preguntarse: ¿qué nuevas mediaciones habilitan y requieren los medios sociales?, ¿cómo contribuyen para la construcción de un periodismo democrático, comprometido e independiente?, ¿a qué peligros lo exponen?

If there was a force that promoted the emergence of the first journalism in the Europe of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, that was a remarkable persuasive will to document the present. A present that becomes history, mobilized by the divergent interests that structure all power relations. Journalism as a profession and field of struggle for meaning is an effective instrument in this symbolic and material contest for power, but also its controller. Thus, he works as an analyst, overseer and narrator, and transforms himself mounted to the historical changes of which he is also the architect. That is why the press as a cultural work is a fruitful reflection of its time. We are talking about technological transformations that established ways of communicating, processing information and organizing society. If the invention of writing as communication technology marked the beginning of history as a revolutionary “means of communication”, the invention of paper, printing, radio or television also represented milestones in the evolution of journalism and human culture Today we are facing the empire of digital media, cultural digitalization transformed the way we relate, represent ourselves and approach the world; however, there is still a lot to ask: what new mediations enable and require social media? How do they contribute to the construction of a committed, independent and democratic journalism? To what dangers do they expose it?
