| dc.description.abstract | El conocimiento de la melancolía preocupó tempranamente a los griegos. La naciente medicina científica buscaba sus causas y tratamiento. Pero también describió y aceptó un aspecto no morboso; de tal forma, el temperamento melancólico pronto se asoció con la existencia de personalidades extraordinarias. Tanto los héroes míticos como las personas dedicadas a la filosofía y la poesía mostraban este rasgo. Así lo hacen notar Hipócrates, Platón, Aristóteles... Y es precisamente el difundido escrito aristotélico la base de tal asociación. Mas no siempre la melancolía gozó de buena fama. Confundida con el descuido, la avaricia, el descontento, la misantropía, fue combatida por teólogos y moralistas. M. Ficino y los renacentistas, al reencontrarse con el mundo clásico, reavivaron su antiguo prestigio. Y Durero la figuró según la concepción humanista de su tiempo. Tampoco faltó la aproximación con los estremecedores temas de la locura y la muerte. Kant la vinculó con el genio y la producción del arte bello. En los períodos románticos, la melancolía se difunde y convierte en mal social, y surgen, así, nuevos enfoques terapéuticos para combatirla como patología psíquica. Sin embargo, tampoco su presencia inquietante en personalidades excepcionales dejó de ser registrada, por lo que mantiene intacto el interés especulativo. And it is precisely the widespread Aristotelian writing that is the basis of such association. But melancholy was not always well known. Confused with carelessness, greed, discontent, misanthropy, it was fought by theolo-gians and moralists. M. Ficino and the Renaissance men, when reencounte-red with the classical world, revived their old prestige. And Dürer figured it according to the humanist conception of his time. There was also no lack of approximation with the shocking themes of madness and death. Kant linked it with genius and the production of beautiful art. In romantic periods, me-lancholy spreads and becomes a social evil, and thus new therapeutic ap-proaches to combat it emerge as psychic pathology. However, its disturbing presence in exceptional personalities did not cease to be registered either, so it keeps the speculative interest intact. | |
